Inspired by the tireless work of His Grace Bishop Marcos Theodosi of Kisumu and All Western Kenya, and having been touched by meeting His predecessor, His Grace Bishop Dr. Athanasios Amos Akunda of Blessed Memory, St. John the Merciful Orthodox Project, Inc is a registered private foundation dedicated to promoting and supporting Orthodox Christianity in Kisumu and All Western Kenya. Our charitable work focuses on providing essential resources to support educational programs and services to those in need enhancing their quality of life and spiritual growth.
In the spirit of St. John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria, who dedicated his life to serving those in need, the foundation, is committed to providing support for the local residents so they may lead fulfilling and meaningful lives in Christ. We work hand in hand with The Holy Monastery of Panagia Triherousa as The Sisters ensure that all resources are used to provide the most basic needs of food, shelter, medical assistance and education, as they live out to Gospel in their loving stewardship of the community while they work tirelessly for The Glory of God!
The Holy Monastery of Panagia Triherousa was founded with the blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa, and with the blessing of the late Bishop Athanasios of Kisumu and All Western Kenya. It was established under the spiritual guidance of Gerontas Apostolos of Crete, who has also founded three other monasteries on the African continent — in Madagascar, South Africa, and Tanzania.
Today, the Monastery is home to a small sisterhood who, together with Gerontas Apostolos and a devoted team of faithful spiritual volunteers from Crete, built the Monastery from humble beginnings. Glory to God!
The Monastery now provides essential material support, spiritual guidance, and inspiring outreach to the surrounding community, serving as a beacon of faith, hope, and love in the region.
With a deep understanding that education is essential for improving everyday life in Kenya, the Diocese and the Monastery are fully dedicated to investing in the future of children by sponsoring school fees for Orthodox faithful children, the children of priests of the Diocese, widowed Presvyteres, and many other local families in need.
Through this commitment, children are given the best possible opportunity to free themselves and their families from a legacy of poverty and to build a brighter future. In doing so, the Monastery bears witness to the Orthodox Church as the Light of Christ, exhibiting mercy, compassion, and love to all. By serving the children of the community in this tangible and transformative way, the Church lives out the Gospel, inspiring local residents who see the Grace and Love of Christ in action.
The Saint Charalambos Orthodox Academy is a private educational institution established by the late Father Theophilos prior to his falling asleep in the Lord. It was founded with a vision to provide strong academic formation rooted in Orthodox Christian values.
Despite the most worthy and tireless efforts of Presvytera Joan to sustain the school, limited resources and support placed the Academy on the verge of closure.
With the guidance and blessing of His Grace Bishop Marcos, this need was prayerfully recognized as an opportunity to serve. Through dedicated assistance and renewed support, we have been able to help restore the school to a state of stability and growth, allowing it once again to thrive for the benefit of its students and the wider community.
